I am the leather production Manager here at Made. That means as well as making the leather products, I also help create patterns and designs and oversee the production of all our leather products in general. How long have you worked at Made Wilfred? Just over 6 years now. Before this I was working for another accessories brand making more traditionally influenced leather goods. Why do you like working at Made? Probably my favorite thing about working for Made is the way I am able to express my passion for art and creativity in the my work. We are encouraged to let our own ideas come through in our work. And are there any skills in particular you feel you have gained from working at Made? Before working for Made I had never worked in jewellery production – which I now love! It's totally different to working with leather. I have also been able to expand my leather work skills by developing a wider product range such as sandals and bags. What is your favourite Made piece? Bold and beautiful, brass is durable and diverse - and in plentiful supply here in Kenya. Brass will tarnish with wear so it's important you clean it regularly to keep it looking as good as new. For those of you who don't have any Brass cleaner to hand, here are some handy tips on how to clean your Made: - Brass does not like to get wet so keep it away from water. - Rub with a jewellery cloth if the brass is becoming tarnished. Soap and water and a soft brush will help shine up your brass jewellery, air dry well afterwards. - Lemon juice can be used to clean your brass jewellery. Rinse clean with warm water before leaving to air dry and buffing to shine. - Using a toothbrush to clean crevices is an easy cheap way to keep your brass pieces clean. How to look after your silver jewellery: Silver naturally tarnishes over time with exposure to air and the environment. Additionally lotions, perfumes, bleach and chlorine all have adverse effects on the quality and look of any silver. In order to ensure that tarnishing doesn’t spoil your silver jewellery, it is important to follow a few simple steps; - Apply any scents and lotions before you put it on - Avoid wearing pieces when doing sport or washing up. - We advise that you keep your jewellery in the pouch it came in to avoid the risk of tarnishing. - Wash with warm water, not hot. Dilute dish soap in a sink full of warm water before adding the silver plated items to avoid dark spots from concentrated dish detergent Extra tips:Brass will tarnish with wear so it's important you clean it regularly to keep it looking as good as new. For those of you who don't have any Brass cleaner to hand, here are some handy tips on how to clean your Made using store cupboard staples you're bound to have in your kitchen. 1. Good ol’ fashioned soap and water Here at Made HQ we use Mothers favourite Fairy Liquid (other brands are available). Simply fill your sink with warm water, squeeze in a dash of the green stuff and, using an old toothbrush or nail brush, give your jewels a good scrub. If your piece is especially tarnished leave to soak for 5-10 minutes before rinsing with clean water and leaving to air dry before giving it a good buff with a clean cloth.2. Lemon Juice This is the method we use at the Made workshop in Kenya. Once our artisans have crafted the jewellery each piece will then be cleaned with lemon juice and then rinsed thoroughly with clean water before being left to air dry and subsequently buffed for added shine. Top tip: Why not use an old toothbrush to clean cracks and crevices that are otherwise hard to reach. 3. Tomato Ketchup (yes really) The acid in tomatoes is acidic enough to remove the tarnish from your brass whilst being gentle enough to prevent any damage – making it the perfect go-to method for cleaning your favourite Made jewels. Simply apply with a brush or cloth and gently scrub. Al voordat je naar binnengaat hoor je het gepraat en gelach van de dames die aan het werk zijn. Ze werken met veel plezier en het maakt hen trots dat ze zich elke dag mooi aan kunnen kleden om naar hun werk te gaan. Voorheen waren ze afhankelijk van gunsten van familie, nu houden ze hun eigen 'jurk' op! Wil je het met eigen ogen zien? Ze zijn bijvoorbeeld hun man verloren of afkomstig uit een arme familie. In het project kunnen de vrouwen hun eigen geld verdienen, om daarmee hun kinderen weer naar school te kunnen sturen.Ook werken er een paar studentes, talentvolle meiden die goede resultaten behalen op hun opleiding. Helaas hadden ze de pech in een gezin geboren te worden met een aantal broers. In Nepal krijgen de jongens altijd voorrang, omdat meisjes toch uitgehuwelijkt worden en hun familie niet verder zullen helpen. De studentes bij Beads for Life verdienen nu hun eigen collegegeld door het maken van prachtige sieraden. Ze werken hard, maar kunnen zo bouwen aan een toekomst voor zichzelf!Beads for Life is opgericht door Nimdiki Sherpa. Nimdiki komt uit een gegoede familie en had het geluk om zich te kunnen scholen en te ontwikkelen. Ze zag echter dat niet alle vrouwen in de maatschappij zich in eenzelfde positie bevonden en voelde een sterke drang daar iets mee te doen. Via een Australische toeriste die ze leerde kennen via het trekkingbureau van haar man, leerde ze een aantal technieken om sieraden te maken. Nu traint ze dagelijks vrouwen in deze technieken, zodat het vakmanschap verspreid wordt. Daarnaast runt ze met veel verve de organisatie en is ze bezig er een florerend bedrijf van te maken!A Beautiful Story leerde Nimdiki Sherpa kennen in 2005. Beads for Life was toen nog een klein werkplaatsje, waar vijf vrouwen af en toe een kettinkje maakten voor toeristen. Samen met de vrouwen heeft A Beautiful Story inmiddels verschillende collecties ontworpen. De sieraden worden op dit moment in Nederland verkocht in meer dan 100 winkels, online en via acties met bedrijven. Er werkt nu een grote groep vrouwen in het atelier van Beads for Life en er worden duizenden sieraden per jaar geproduceerd!De collectie is samengesteld uit uiteenlopende modellen. Elk stuk is volledig handgemaakt met veel liefde voor het vak. Er worden verschillende materialen gebruikt, zoals glaskralen en halfedelstenen. De vrouwen gebruiken bijzondere technieken om de kralen te rijgen, zelfs haakwerk! Maar volgens het prachtige spreekwoord 'Geef iemand een vis, dan kan hij eten. Geef iemand een hengel, dan kan hij leren vissen.', besloten ze samen dat Dambar een vak moest leren om zichzelf te onderhouden. Hij leerde het vak van zilversmid en begon een kleine werkplaats. Via de Nederlandse contacten kwamen er langzaam maar zeker een aantal klanten. De grote ommekeer kwam toen Dambar zilver mocht gaan leveren aan de wereldwinkels in Nederland, via groothandel Madat Nepal. Madat Nepal hielp Dambar zijn fabriek uit te bouwen tot een prachtige werkplaats waar meer smeden een baan konden vinden. Dambar levert de mooiste sieraden aan de wereldwinkels door heel het land. De samenwerking met A Beautiful StoryDambar en Cathelijne, de oprichtster van A Beautiful Story, raakten bevriend toen zij een half jaar in Nepal woonde en werkte als vrijwilliger voor een Nederlandse stichting. Na haar studie besloot Cathelijne het marketingvak te leren bij een groot bedrijf en ging aan de slag bij Douwe Egberts.Echter na een jaar of vijf voelde dat niet meer goed. Het idee dat je het doet om de beurzen van rijke aandeelhouders nog meer te spekken, werd meer en meer een obstakel. Helemaal omdat ze wist wat er met haar marketingbudgetten in landen als Nepal gedaan kon worden. Ze besloot het roer om te gooien, gaf haar baan op en starte met activiteiten om Dambar te helpen nieuwe doelgroepen aan te boren. Zo zouden ze samen meer werk kunnen creëren voor zijn fabriek! Lage kaste jongeren vinden werkIn de fabriek van Dambar werken zo'n vijftien tot twintig smeden, afhankelijk van de hoeveelheid werk. Veel van de makers zijn afkomstig (net als Dambar) uit de lage kaste groep van de bevolking. In de maatschappij staat deze groep vaak achteraan als het gaat om onderwijs en banen. In de zilverfabriek krijgen ze een baan en een goed salaris. Ook dit is ongewoon in Nepal. Normaal gesproken krijg je als leerling geen geld, totdat je helemaal geschoold bent. Kwaliteit, kwaliteit, kwaliteitDambar heeft al vroeg in zijn carrière het belang van kwaliteit geleerd. De zogenaamde strategie van de drie K's: 1. kwaliteit, 2. kwaliteit, 3. kwaliteit. Je ziet het onmiddelijk aan zijn producten, veel mensen zouden niet verwachten dat deze in een ontwikkelingsland gemaakt zijn. De kwaliteit is te vergelijken met de beste edelsmeden in Nederland. Alle producten worden volledig handgemaakt. De fabriek bezit een aantal machines, bijvoorbeeld voor het walsen van het zilver, zodat er platte plaatjes ontstaan. Maar het in elkaar zetten van de sieraden en het zetten van stenen of andere elementen, is allemaal handwerk. Daarnaast is kwaliteit ook werken op een maatschappelijk verantwoorde manier. De zilverfabriek van Dambar werkt volledig via de principes van fair trade (zie ook Fair Trade). Zo werken de smeden in goede arbeidsomstandigheden en worden zij eerlijk betaald, waarbij gekeken wordt naar leefbare lonen. Geluk voor de smedenDe belangrijkste collectie uit Nepal is het assortiment gelukssieraden. Zo worden bijvoorbeeld scherven van oude kopjes ingelegd in zilver. Scherven brengen ten slotte geluk! Via vele wegen wordt servies ingezameld om de unieke armbanden te maken. Daarnaast was al snel het idee geboren om ook gelukssymbolen uit de oosterse cultuur te gebruiken. Dat leidde tot de Lucky Buddha collectie (bekijk de collectie). Elk elementje in de armband vertelt een verhaal over geluk in Nepal. Zij trouwde met een Nepalees en zag al gauw dat er veel kwaliteit was in het handwerk van de Nepalezen. De wens was om goede werkgelegenheid en support te combineren met een mooi traditioneel én modisch product. Dat heeft geleid tot de werkplaats Masala Beads. 25 Mensen hebben nu een vaste baan bij deze organisatie en 50 mensen worden regelmatig ingehuurd om sieraden te maken. Hippe winkel in KathmanduIn Kathmandu is het centrum voor reizigers het gezellige toeristenwijkje Thamel. Geen toeval dat je hier de geweldige winkel van Masala Beads kunt vinden. De winkel valt meteen op, omdat hij anders is dan de vele identieke shopjes waar je de standaard souvenirs kunt vinden. De prachtige collectie sieraden is mooi uitgestald in vitrines en aan de wand. Net een snoepwinkeltje! De winkel heeft vaste prijzen, zodat de eigenaren kunnen garanderen dat de makers altijd een goed salaris krijgen.
